HOW WELL ARE YOUR AGING?

I thought I would start my blogging platform with some assessments, just like I would do when first meeting one of my patients. I have written up three sets of assessments on Posture and Alignment, Mobility and Flexibility and Functional Strength, Mobility and Balance to reveal how well your body is aging.

The goal of these assessments is to make you aware of the changes that may be happening to your body that you do not even see but may very well feel. To also give you a better understanding of your body’s current posture and alignment and its ability to bend and move.

My hope is that by going through these assessments, you will walk away with either a good feeling that your body is aging well, or I will open your eyes to the fact that there are areas that you need to work on.

If you experience any pain while doing these assessments, please pay attention to it! Do not fear this pain. Pain is how our bodies tells us that something is not right. Please acknowledge this pain and if it does not start to improve within a week, consult with your physician or other health care professional, like a physical therapist who can do a more in-depth and thorough assessment of your medical history and mobility.

I believe that the body always tries to heal itself, if you let it. I do not believe, because we are getting older, our bodies just become stiff, and you must live with aches and pains. I believe most of the stiffness, aches and pains we feel are due to the mindless repetitive and habitual habits that we do throughout our day. Once we are made aware, we can stop these habits and allow our bodies to heal.

I strongly encourage everyone to do these set of assessments at least once a year. You can do them around your birthday or at the start of the New Year to continue to track how your body is aging.

After each assessment, I have repeated the assessment with explanations and clarifications on what is proper body posture, alignment, mobility, and flexibility at any age. I hope to surprise you and then educate and inspire you to make changes and take actions to improve upon your body’s health.

ABOUT ME

I have been a licensed physical therapist since graduating with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2012. I have also earned a Master of Science in Exercise Science and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. Since 1994, I have been educating and motivating young children to the very frail about the importance of movement, fitness, and wellness.

I was inspired to write my blog after transitioning from an outpatient physical therapist to geriatrics care. Working now with an older population who have become weak and frail, I could not help but think, that if I had met many of my patients 30 years ago or even 10 years before, I could have helped them to prevent many of their mobility, posture and pain concerns that are now hindering their ability to live their best lives.

What I genuinely love about being a physical therapist is the ability to educate people about our amazing bodies. It is so rewarding to see that aha or light bulb moment when something I said clicks with my patients and they get it. I have just empowered them to help themselves. This is what I hope to accomplish with this website.
